Caring for Your Christmas Tree
Keep your tree fresh, healthy, and looking its best throughout the festive season with our simple tips.
Fresh-Cut Christmas Trees
All conifers naturally shed needles especially when they dry out. These steps will help your tree stay greener and fuller for longer.
Before Bringing Your Tree Indoors
• Re-cut the trunk: Trim around 2 inches off the base to expose fresh cells that absorb water better.
• Stand the tree in water: Place it in a bucket of water outdoors in a cool, shaded spot until you’re ready to bring it inside. This helps rehydrate the tree and reduces needle drop.
Once Indoors
• Use a water-holding stand: Trees can drink more than a pint of water a day check and top up regularly.
• Keep away from heat sources: Avoid radiators, fireplaces, and other direct heat.
Hydration is key: Treat your tree like a bouquet of fresh-cut flowers.
• Let the branches settle: Any flat areas from transport will relax naturally once the tree warms up.
• Remove netting early: Cut off the net so the branches can fall back into their natural shape.
Pot-Grown Christmas Trees
Pot-grown trees can be enjoyed indoors for Christmas and then replanted outdoors to grow on.
Before Bringing Your Tree Indoors
• Remove any protective sleeve.
• Water thoroughly: Soak the pot/compost in water for at least 10 minutes, then allow it to drain for a few hours.
Once Indoors
• Position away from heat sources.
• Water regularly: Keep the compost moist—but not waterlogged—just like any houseplant.
• Moist compost also helps keep the tree stable in its pot.
After Christmas
• Replant or repot in early spring.
• Water well as it establishes outdoors.
